Reflection
Morning prayer is less about producing perfect words and more about directing the day's first attention to God. says, "in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up." The psalmist prays and then watches expectantly for how God will answer through the day.
shows Jesus rising "a great while before day" to pray in a solitary place, before the crowds found him. If he needed that quiet, so do we. Even a few minutes before the phone and the to-do list can change the tone of a day.
grounds it all: God's mercies "are new every morning." Yesterday's failures do not set today's limits. You begin again with fresh mercy, not with a debt to work off.
Prayer
Lord, before this day begins, I bring it to you. Thank you that your mercies are new this morning. Direct my thoughts, my words and my work. Show me the people I need to notice and the one thing that matters most today. Help me watch for you in the ordinary hours ahead. Amen.
