Bible verses about anxiety

When anxiety will not quiet down

Bring the noise to Scripture and learn to set it before God.

Scripture

Philippians 4:6-7Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.“Be careful for nothing” means “do not be anxious about anything.”

1 Peter 5:7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Matthew 6:34Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.“Take no thought for the morrow” means “do not worry about tomorrow.”

Psalm 55:22Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.“Suffer” here means allow: he will never let the righteous be moved.

Isaiah 26:3Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

John 14:27Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Psalm 94:19In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.

Translation: King James Version (KJV)

Reflection

Scripture does not pretend the concern is small. Paul wrote from prison, with his own future unresolved, and he still told the church to bring every request to God "by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving." Prayer here is not a technique for making worry disappear. It is the act of handing over what you cannot carry, one specific thing at a time.

The promise is a peace that "passeth all understanding" and keeps the heart and mind, even while the situation stays open. gives the reason this is safe: you can cast your care on him "for he careth for you." You are not bothering God with something too small.

then narrows the frame to today. Tomorrow will have its own trouble and its own grace. You only have to bring this day's portion.

Prayer

Lord, I bring this anxious thought to you by name. You already know it, but I want to stop carrying it alone. Thank you that you care for me, even here. Guard my heart and my mind with a peace I cannot produce myself, and help me take only today's steps today. Amen.

Pause and consider

Name one worry aloud, read slowly, then write one honest sentence to God.
