Reflection

The Bible preserves honest cries for help and belief struggling beside unbelief. In a desperate father says, "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." Jesus does not send him away to sort his faith out first. He helps.

shows a believer arguing with his own soul: "Why art thou cast down?" Doubt and discouragement can be brought into prayer, not hidden from it. The psalmist keeps talking to God while he waits to praise him again.

In Jesus meets Thomas's doubt with his wounds, inviting him to look and touch. Thomas ends with one of the clearest confessions in the Gospels: "My Lord and my God." Honest questions, asked toward God rather than away from him, can become the road to deeper faith.

Prayer

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. I bring you my questions instead of hiding them. Meet me the way you met the father who cried out and the disciple who needed to see. Where I cannot yet see clearly, keep me honest and keep me near you. Amen.
