Reflection

Forgiveness releases repayment into God's hands while still naming what happened. grounds it in what we have received: forgive "even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." We forgive from mercy, not from pretending the wrong was small.

assumes real grievances will happen, "if any man have a quarrel against any." Forgiveness does not mean the harm did not matter, that trust is restored at once, or that you must stay in an unsafe situation. It means you stop demanding that the other person repay what only God can settle.

In Jesus ties forgiving others to living in the Father's forgiveness. It is often a process rather than a single moment. You may need to forgive the same wound more than once as it surfaces again.

Prayer

Lord, you know exactly what was done and how much it hurt. I name it before you honestly. I choose to release this debt into your hands, even if my feelings have not caught up yet. Thank you for the mercy you have shown me. Give me wisdom about trust and safety, and heal what this has broken in me. Amen.

Pause and consider

Name the harm honestly, then pray one sentence of release.
