2 Corinthians 1:3-4Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Psalm 147:3He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Translation: King James Version (KJV)

Reflection

Scripture draws near to the brokenhearted instead of demanding quick recovery. says the Lord is "nigh unto them that are of a broken heart." Grief is not a sign that faith has failed. It is often the place where God comes closest.

Jesus calls those who mourn blessed in , not because sorrow is good, but because they "shall be comforted." Comfort usually comes slowly, in company, and in ordinary moments. There is no schedule you are failing to keep.

holds out the end of the story: God himself will wipe away every tear, and death will be no more. That hope does not cancel today's tears. It gives them somewhere to go. You can weep and hope in the same breath.

Prayer

Lord, you are near the brokenhearted, so be near me now. Hold this grief with me. I do not need to pretend I am finished hurting, and I do not need to have the right words. Comfort me through your presence and through the people you send. Keep the hope of the day when you wipe away every tear alive in me. Amen.

Pause and consider

Read aloud, slowly, then tell God one thing you miss.
