Reflection
Work becomes an act of service when it is done for the Lord rather than for anxious approval. was first written to people with little control over their jobs, and it still told them to work "heartily, as to the Lord." No task is too ordinary to be offered to God.
invites you to commit your work to the Lord so that your plans are established. That does not guarantee every project succeeds. It means your effort rests in his hands rather than on your ability to control the result.
asks God to "establish the work of our hands." It is a prayer for meaning in labor that will not last forever on its own. Honest, careful work done today is not wasted, even when no one notices it.
Prayer
Lord, I offer you the work in front of me today, the visible parts and the unseen ones. Keep my motives honest and my effort steady. Where I am tempted to work for applause or out of fear, remind me that I work for you. Establish the work of my hands, and give me rest when the day is done. Amen.
Pause and consider
Do one task carefully as an act of worship today.
